I Want to RecognizeThe Water Scares Me

I was overwhelmed by a sense of déjà vu. Haven't I been here before?

Massive tree trunks surrounded the familiar park square. In the center, a simple small fountain rested. Whenever I glanced around to take in the rest of the park, my eyes kept returning to the fountain against my will, as if the water was pulling them.

I didn't like water. That much I figured out from the way my eyes nervously strayed back to it a couple feet away. As I walked around it, I spotted a yellow fur ball the size of a baseball swimming on the surface.

A meager endA young boy just outside of a city was playing in the woods. His family lived right at the edge, just before you entered downtown. They had a nice spread of land, a lake for fishing, and a few cows in the stable. They were humble, made their living by selling at the local farmer's market. 
He was gleefully sprinting through the desolate forest, all the leaves were dead so the overall hue was dark, and brown. It created an ominous feeling, but the boy was immune to it. He kept frolicking like he was in a great plane of flowers. Behind him a plume of toxic smoke rocketed towards the ceiling of the planet. The boy felt a prick of heat hit the back of his legs, exposed by his bright orange shorts. He turned around, he had to shield his eyes from the piercing light invading his retinas  He could only peer over his now raised arm, trying to decipher the situation.

What lurks within'Your dreamscape goes on for years, as you travel along the set out path you become increasingly weary of what's coming up next. The grab bag plethora of randomness is almost undeniable, you're likely to come across a giant man eating clown ravaging a small village or a vision of the future end of the world or your teeth falling out one by one.
 As you continue down the road it begins to morph, becoming topsy turvy, sending your stomache for a ride. Your vision becomes skewed as you spiral infinitely forward, unaware of your fate. Eventually you stop, standing at the precipise of your own consciousness. The here and now, you watch your self slumbering. An ideal picture perfect end to the nonsensical rantings of your inner mind. You look back at the fear inducing-happiness creating insanity behind you and smile. 
Kids, do not...“I need something to drink...” Angie muttered.

She reached inside the nearby fridge and grabbed a beaker of purple fluid. Not caring what was in the beaker at the moment, she drank its contents.

Poof!

Angie coughed from the resulting smoke that came from ingesting the fluid, only to find her...er, himself different. He was hairier than normal, his chest was flat, his hair was shorter, and he was wearing a pair of trousers instead of a skirt.

“Where’s the Director?!” she/he yelled in embarrassment. “One of the scientists put some sort of gender switching formula in the fridge!”
HunterHargreaves stood watching the greyness around him. His eyes wandered back and forth, watching for anything except the ghostly movements of the fog creeping along the ground.

The metal of his Directed Ionisation Cannon clinked as it cooled from the recent gunfire. Minutes earlier he'd felt like a fool firing it at nothing but rocks and bushes, but he needed to get their attention somehow.

 "Piper! Carter! Get in here it's time for dinner!" I heard my mom call out. I turned my head for a moment by instinct. A hard football connected with the side of my head. I blinked my bright blue eyes a few times and shot a glare at my identical twin sister, Carter. She smirked and tossed her dirty blonde hair behind her shoulder.

 "Oopsies. Did I hit you? I'm SO sorry." She said with a fake tone of sympathy. I growled at her and she stuck out her tongue.

 "Carter, knock it off." My mom shouted from the door. Carter groaned in annoyance.

 "I'm not Carter, she is!" Carter said, sneaking me a wink. I quickly caught on.

 
Space Warrior 15Gen: A riot? That's easy!

Gen walks over to a thin prisoner and picks him up

Gen: HEY!

Everyone looks at Gen

Gen: RIOT!

Immediately, everyone began shouting and fighting, the usual signs of a riot

Prisoner: Forget controlling my anger! LET'S RIOT! *gets tackled*

Mark: Now what?

Zeo: We just need to get to the landing bay.

Gen: But that's on the other side of the prison!

Zeo: *brings out Z-Saber* Don't worry, just follow me!

Meanwhile

Nala: *hears the riot* What is that?! *runs outside and sees everyone fighting* WHAT?!? HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A LOCK DOWN!!!!!!

Fire    The city burned, fire lighting up the night sky. Looking at the carnage in front of her, Khana wondered how it came to this.
   How had a simple job turned into a massacre? Killing the villagers hadn't been part of the plan.
   This time her boss had gone too far. He needed to be stopped before he did any more damage.
Hers    Lily looked at the giant teddy bear among the selection of soft toys. She had used all her money on the machine in order to get that teddy but it hadn't worked. She was fed up with pretending to be normal. What was the point of having these powers if she couldn't use them?
   Lily concentrated on the metal claw and willed it to move with her mind. She guided it to where she needed it to be and lowered it to clamp onto the bear.

   It fell down the shoot and into her hands. The bear was finally hers.
Fail    Jordan quickly came to the realisation that he was screwed. He thought that he could get away with it as other people had. Looking at the paper in front of him, he instantly regretted his decision.

   And now he didn't know what to do. He flicked through the pages but it made no difference. He still didn't know any of the answers.
Gurdon    As a giant, it was his duty to scare off those who climbed the beanstalk. Guards weren't a regular occurrence until the human named Jack entered Giant country and swindled everyone out of their money and possessions.
   Until Jack, giants had no fears of the thought of thieves.
   Gurdon had always wanted to join the theatre. His dream was to sing and dance in Broadway but because of Little Jack, his job was to guard the beanstalk and scare away unwelcome visitors.
Cuckoo's Nest    Every year this happened, and she was sick of it. Harry would always find the best Easter eggs in the garden and everyone else would get the leftovers.
   Her basket held a measly eight eggs while Harry had twenty eggs, all medium or large size chocolate. As he went through the bushes to search for more chocolate treats, Lana saw the egg basket left alone on the stone. Unguarded. Vulnerable. It was perfect. Lana plucked the chocolate eggs and placed them in her basket.
Silent Movie    "Go along the hallway until you reach a set of stairs going down on your left."
   Karen's voice sounded different over the radio. The slight crackle of the walkie talkie made her voice sound deeper.
   Jessica thought once again how odd it was to see the world in black and white. Just the other week she was marvelling at the trees and their autumn leaves. Holding the radio to her mouth, Jessica pressed the button and said, "Karen, I'm on the stairs. What now?"
   "On every level, there's a door that leads to a control room. You want B5. Tell me once you've reached the room and I'll direct you from there."
   "OK. Thanks."

Life Mate

    Nora had been surprised when she found out that the inhabitants of this planet didn't have some sort of marriage ceremony. Åsh had told her that once lovers accepted and claimed each other as a life mate, it was considered to be stronger than human marriage ceremonies. As they couldn't decide what to do, Nora and Åsh decided to compromise and combine the two traditions. Nora got her big family gathering and Åsh got his vows.
    "Nora Wing, citizen of New London, section 6, of planet Earth, I claim you as my life mate."
    Now it was her turn. Nora took a deep breath and hoped she wouldn't make a mistake. If she did mispronounce his name, it would be considered an insult. "Åshlichtein Bjorkona Ýepsilon Psykeria, Lord of area KX-2081 of planet Nexon Zeblir, I claim you as my life mate." She heard Gabe, an old friend and trusted member of her crew, whistle. He had been teasing Nora about claiming her life mate but he hadn't understood why she had been so nervous about it.

    With tension leaving her shoulders, she smiled at her husband. Nora and Åsh had the rest of their lives together.

Simple and sweet. Definitely like the jibe at sci-fi names. Like the genre, but man. Some of them are a mouthful :)

I've read a few science-fiction novels but I find the genre hard to follow. Maybe it's because I haven't read well-known sci-fi books but with the ones I have read, they either info dump or expect you to know what's going on without much explanation. And yeah, the names can get ridiculous!
